MASSIVE Spotlight | Goldroom: Exclusive Interview + ‘Fifteen’


GOLDROOM has certainly carved out his niche in the last half year, gaining recognition around the world as one of the top tropical disco producers. As one of the leaders in a growing movement of young, energized producers, Goldroom continues to pus his style of dance music to new heights with incredible original productions like ‘Angeles’ and ‘Morgan’s Bay’, as well as top charting remixes of Alpine, Gigamesh, and Niki and the Dove. His style is unique and represented by very few producers around the globe, and we’re so very excited to bring his tropical flavor to the tropical paradise of San Diego. Read on below to find out his own thoughts on his style, what his favorite cities in the world are to play, and what anticipates for his record label, plus more. He just dropped a brand new track for FREE today as well, included at the end of the interview.
We are aware that you made music before you became Goldroom. Tell us a little bit about that and how you made the transition into Goldroom.

I’ve always been involved in music projects my whole life. Up until a couple of years ago I never really felt comfortable enough to show people my music though. I think I probably have 5 albums worth of songs that I’ve recorded before I got involved with NightWaves, which was my first serious band. Goldroom happened mostly because I started to get really excited about the idea of collaborating more with other people. When you’re in a band, every decision and every song happens with the whole band. I really wanted to have the opportunity to work with new people and to sort of be more flexible. I had a bunch of demos written, which became the basis for the Angeles EP.

We like to refer to your style if music as Tropical. Is that an accurate label for your sound?
I certainly don’t set out to make music in a specific style. I’m a big believer in the power of the ‘song’, and I try to write that way, regardless of what style it sounds like. I guess the vibe people catch off a track is something that just happens. I definitely love tropical things, and I’ve been drawn to the ocean my whole life, so it doesn’t surprise me that people can hear its influence in my songs. I spent a huge portion of my childhood listening to music on boats, so it does make sense.

What is your favorite original track and remix you’ve produced and why?
Thats definitely like picking a favorite child, its impossible! At the moment I’m just really proud of my newest single “Fifteen”, which I think is the most honest and real song I’ve released to date. It came to me quickly and has some real meaning to me personally. As for remixes, if I had to pick, I guess I’d choose the Niki & The Dove remix because it tends to get the biggest response at my shows, and I can’t think of anything cooler than someone singing along to some music that you helped to create.

This may sound overly flattering, but your music reminds us of The Doors or RHCP in the sense that it is so Californian. Your music oozes white sand and palm trees. Everything from the instruments to the tempo and the lyrics; it seems that the music is such a product of your environment. Would you say that is an accurate description? We may be a little biased considering we’re California natives.
No, California has been a huge influence on me. I think your surroundings have to influence you. I grew up in Boston, dreaming about living somewhere that was warm and sunny year round. Even though I’ve lived in Los Angeles for almost 10 years now, I’m still just as enamored with Southern California as I was the day I moved here. Again, I don’t set out to make a ‘California’ sound when I make music, I’m just trying to write good songs, regardless of genre, but its totally exciting that people associate me with that sound.

Do you have a particular creative process when creating a song or beat? Anytime time of day or place that really gets the music juices going? Same goes for your remixes.
There’s totally no rhyme or reason to be honest. I’ve started ideas at the studio at 9am with a cup of coffee in hand. I’ve also started songs at 4am when I was far from sober. I can’t really explain how inspiration works for me, and I’m kind of afraid to think about it too much. When a song or remix happens quickly and comes together fast, its pretty magical. I’m pretty terrified of losing that kind of inspirational gift.

There’s a new wave of disco producers that seem to be popping up as well as a growing group of listeners. Do you think this is just the latest trend to hit the dance music world or do think it will establish itself as a core genre?
I think its a bit of both to be honest. Music trends explode and fade out so quickly these days that who knows what will be ‘cool’ in six months, let alone 2 or 3 years in the future. I do think that all of the new music fans enjoying disco is also a part of a much wider and more exciting trend in music where young people are open and excited to listen to electronic music. I don’t think that trend is going anywhere. Again, I think the artists that write great songs will survive whatever trend cycles happen. As an artist, its really dangerous to get caught up in whatever the cool trend is at the moment.

You’ve recently toured around the world in places like Mexico, Canada, and all over Europe. Where is the crowd most receptive to your music (U.S. included) and does it create a certain stigma about California?
I’ve been super lucky to get to travel around a bit to play songs for people and on the whole people are all super receptive and excited about the music. Its a trip to me that I can play a peak time set and never go over 120 bpm and keep everyone bouncing around for two hours. The cities that ended up the craziest though? Paris, Mexico City, and Toronto for sure. Those cities have special scenes right now and a lot of people supporting great new music. My last show in San Diego was actually really special for me. I have a lot of love for that city.

Name 5 producers/djs that are flying under the radar that you think we should all listen to.
I’m mostly stoked on people coming up on my label, Binary Records. Everyone should check out Lancelot, and keep their eyes out for Touch Tone.

If you could collab with any artist, living or dead, who would it be and why?
I think I’d love to work with someone like Bob Dylan or Jim Morrison. I’m really drawn to poetry and lyric writing, and so writing something with someone of that caliber is something I’d love to do.

What can we expect next from you and your label Binary?
Lots of music. Ive just released my new single “Fifteen”, which you can get for a free download. As for Binary, there’s lots of exciting music on the way.

We’ll wrap it up with this – You’re trapped on a desert island with one instrument? What are you bringing?
