The time has come for one of our very own. SL resident techy Vyranis celebrates his first official release, his Automaton EP on Temple Music Group. We knew he was into production software and DJ-tech when bringing him onto our team, and that having someone on our team who had this knowledge was invaluable. But when he dropped his Automaton EP on me the other day not only was I pleasantly surprised, but I was anxious to get it up on the site! The dude exhibits some serious skills and totally lives up to the quality that we post here on SL. I got Logikal with Vyranis so you, our readership, could get to know what he was all about. What exactly is a Vyranis? Is it top secret? Does it have teeth?

Why yes! It does have teeth. Ever since I was a little kid, I was obsessed with dinosaurs and their evolution. When I was a little older i transferred that obsession to still living, prehistoric giant lizards, especially the Komodo Dragon. When it came time for me to pick a name, my first instinct was “Varanus” which is the scientific genus for the Komodo. I wanted to give it my own swing on things though so I made it my own by spelling it “Vyranis”.

What got you into producing electronic music?

Music has been a driving force for as long as I can remember. I did some pretty embarrassing things with band and choir in high school and a little in college, however I always figured it would be more of a hobby, than a job.

I was a DJ for two years in college, used it to pay most of my bills. For two years I was immersed in other peoples beats and tunes, subconsciously taking notes and compiling some personal do’s and dont’s which I would later learn to tap into. When I graduated and moved to San Francisco, I quickly found myself drawn to the EDM scene, mostly at Ruby Skye. I was exposed to DJ’s who also made the music they played, and I suppose that’s what sparked it all.

What are your favorite VST’s and why?

My favorite VST for the moment would have to be Native Instrument’s FM8. It’s tricky to tackle, but now that I’ve gotten past most of the learning curve, the raw sounds produced by just blending different types of waves at the most basic level, have been super powerful. FM8 offers the same building blocks that most preset-based synths fill in for you, so the view behind the virtual circuit board was appealing to me.

What are your favorite electronic music genre’s at the moment?

I think I’m most excited about Progressive Dubstep currently. I am floored by what Seven Lions has been doing, by what The Glitch Mob continues to do with it. I’m a firm believer that dubstep music doesn’t have to be strictly party wobbles.

Is there a creative process you go through when producing a track?

I always start with the drums, get a loud and boomy loop going in Ableton. Then I usually start composing right away, with instruments that are more familiar to me (i.e. Piano, Orchestral Strings, Electric Bass, Guitar). I figure out the melodies and harmonies of the different sections in these instruments first, since I seem to be able to get down what’s in my head better and faster. Then I go through and design different synth patches based around what genre it is and replace those instruments with my own electronic ones.

I prefer an iced coffee and cigarette to really get my creative juices flowing. Any process you go through to achieve creative genius?

Haha! I don’t know if I’ve been able to tap into “creative genius” yet, but when I do tend to get the ball rolling, I usually warm up by improvising for an hour on a piano, playing to a drum beat. I also alternate between turntable-style scratching over a drum beat, to warm up and get moving.

Are there any specific artists that you’d say inspire your sound?

I am avidly searching and always redifining what I think my signature sound will be along the way. My earlier influences were Justice and Daft Punk, when I was still learning the basics. Now that I’ve spent more time in the studio, I look to some pretty diverse artists. I’ve always respected and loved the catalogs of “The Mars Volta” and “Muse”, and often times try to incorporate some of their rock progressions into my tracks. Recently, I’ve been really inspired by Dillon Francis, Cazzette, and Kill The Noise.

What is it about music that makes you love it so much?

This is a hard one. I’ve gone through several different phases throughout my years, switching between different genres. I think what contributed most though, would have to be listening to some rough cuts of “Imagine” by John Lennon when I was younger. I was really taken by the raw, sometimes guttural emotion, John had while singing/playing, and was able to send through the speakers to his listeners.

What is playing in your headphones.. RIGHT NOW?

501 – Grindhouse.  Can’t get enough of this tune.

How did you link up with Temple Music Group for the EP release?

I got some attention for my Calvin Harris remix, by rising early in the beatport competiton. Although I didn’t end up winning, Temple Music Group liked my remix enough to chat with me. I liked the stuff that I was hearing from Manics, Fista Cuffs, and Earjerker already on their label, so I was most excited by the prospect of being able to work locally with their artists and studio staff.

Anything else in store for the future? Working on any releases?

I have a new remix coming out soon for release and a few free bootlegs coming out soon for free download.

If you could play any venue/festival/show in the world, what would it be?

I was one of the lucky few who got to see Daft Punk at Coachella, so I think a part of me will always have a soft spot for that venue because of that show’s lasting effect on my mind.

We know you’re a tech-head so we want to know, where do you see music technology headed?

Without a doubt, music tech is heading to touch screens. I’ve started incoporating the iPad apps, Lemur and touchAble into my studio and live setups and they’ve both enhanced and expanded what I previously thought possible from live performance. I can’t wait to see what Ableton and FL Studio have in store for touch screen computers going forward!
