Essential Mix: Live At Rockness (6/18/11)

The Scottish music festival Rockness, which Mr. Pete Tong notes is nestled right up against Loch Ness Lake, occurred last weekend and it just so happens BBC Radio 1 was in attendance to record this weeks Essential Mix. This specific essential mix consists of 4 full live recorded sets from DJ Shadow, Simian Mobile Disco, Fake Blood, and Skrillex respectively, making this essential edition far longer than the usual 2 hour set. Note: these essential mixes are similar to previously live recorded essential mixes in that you can hear the crowd in the background throughout. It’s kind of cool at points to hear the crowd getting rowdy and chanting. Sounds like you Scotts were having a great f**kin time.
Veteran DJ Shadow showed off his live set for Rocknessers fortunate enough to be in attendance. The extremely intelligent and intricate Shadow candidly jokes that he approaches festivals with the mindstate of “Hit em hard and leave”, as the hour set time is shorter than the usual. Witness a true artist. I’d kill to see this live.

Even after all these years Simian Mobile Disco is still doing the same thing – making killer techno and killing their live shows. The Rockness set was no exception as they did their usual thing playing a pure SMD live set with both old and new goodies.

Fake Blood was totally in his element at Rockness providing a stellar set with lots of tension and great feel. I love a set where I don’t stop grooving despite not knowing many of the tracks and Fake Blood provides this.

Skrillex‘s set is what we’ve come to expect from him. Humongous amounts of bass and extremely high energy. There’s a few new tracks he’s been throwing around too, and the crowd is suuuuuper hyped the whole time.
