Sharps and flats; the nuts and screws that hold a keyboard together. They don’t quite fit in with the rest of the white keys, but when used correctly, the black keys can add a slightly off-hinge appeal to ordinary piano play. The unconventional rock duo The Black Keys have been putting together outstanding albums for a handful of years now, but have just this last year attracted award-winning acclaim. Their 2010 album Brothers won Best Alternative Music Album at the 2011 Grammy’s, and for good reason.  Patrick Carney’s raw off beat drumming and Dan Auerbach’s bluesy emotional vocals combine to make (what seems like to me) an eerie combination of classic rock and baroque/renaissance classical music. Auerbach’s voice is almost “Hendrix-like” in feel and attack, which complements the stabbing piano chords and reverbed guitar riffs perfectly. What I like best about The Black Keys, and especially the Brothers album, is that I feel like I’m listening to a old western story more so than a collection of songs. All in all, The Black Keys deserve all of the attention they are getting and are a MUST SEE at Coachelle this year.

Bonus Coachella! – Sasha

Just recently discovered Sasha for myself and I’m wondering under what rock I’ve been living. When it comes to DJ Mags Top 100 DJ’s, Sasha has ranked in the top ten for eleven years straight, only recently falling out but still hangin’ in there. His focus is less on original tracks and more on putting on the most entrancing, technically complex, i’vebeendancingfortwentyminutesandthebasshasntevendropped sets EVER. If you’re in the Sahara definitely let loose to Sasha. For a taste of what he will be bringing to the fields listen to his set from Glastonbury (EPIC!)
