I had the chance to see Bon Iver at the Shrine in LA this past September. To say I was lucky to see them is an understatement. Having somehow landed tickets to their sold out show, my first experience with their music was organic bliss. They are by far some of the most talented musicians I have ever had the chance to see perform. I am ashamed to say that I only heard of them the day of the concert. Knowing not one of their songs, by the end of the concert I felt like I had been listening to them for years.

Their first album “For Emma, Forever Ago” received critical acclaim and is not only considered one of the best albums of 2008, but one of the best albums of the 2000′s. Tracks like Skinny Love and For Emma embody Bon Iver’s musically versatility and beautiful song writing. My musical description of them would be Mumford and Sons with a bohemian twist. Their self titled second album was released in June 2011. In their sophomore endeavor, the group stretched their musically boundaries ever further, creating a much more experimental record than the prior. Although the second album has less of their now signature vocals, it does however give the musicians much more opportunity to show off their pristine composition and instrumentation.  Utilizing a wide assortment of instruments like the piano and a brass section, coupled with their eerily comforting vocals, Bon Iver creates  the kind of music where you hold onto every note of every chord and every syllable of every word.

You WILL go see them at Coachella. It might be the best decision you’ll make all weekend.

  1. How the hell’d you get tickets for that show? Tickets sold out in England about an hour after they were announced on sale.

I saw Bon Iver a few years back and was in the exact same position. Despite not knowing a single song of theirs, they were still my highlight of the entire festival. Absolutely amazing band.

Check out Justin Vernon’s solo stuff aswell, Hazletons is a brilliant EP to listen to :)
